Modeling after the Apple MacBook Air is a design feat few have taken on, with the Samsung Series 9 being one of the most recent examples. Now throw Asus into the mix. At Computex 2011, the Asus UX21 takes on more MacBook Air characteristics than any other ultraportable Ive seen thus far, and it packs quite a performance punch for a little guy.

The term "unibody" is a design term coined by Apple and one that Asus had no trouble using when it lifted the wraps off of the UX21. Indeed, its unibody frame is entirely engorged in aluminum metal, a much more polished version than the one found on the MacBook Air. The metal is hardened so that any worries about its durability should be put to the rest.Like the Air 11-inch, the UX21 has a sloping design, which starts at 7mm in the back and tapers to 3mm once you reach the front bezel. It tips the scales at 2.2 pounds, which is exactly what the Air 11-inch weighs. The 11.6-inch widescreen and 1,366x768 resolution are also consistent with the Air. It uses a similar Chiclet-style keyboard and glass touchpad, though I found the two mouse buttons a bit too resistant for my tastes.

There are some subtle differences with regards to their feature sets. One of the UX21s two USB ports houses USB 3.0 technology (the Air 11-inch has two USB 2.0 ports). Instead of mini-DisplayPort, the UX21 has a mini-HDMI port. They both dont have built-in SD card readers, which would have been impressive had Asus pulled one off. Storage comes in SSD varieties: 64GB or 128GB. Asus also claims that with these drives, the UX21 can resume from sleep in two seconds.

The UX21 that was on display ran on an Intel Core i5-2557M (1.7GHz) processor, which means its a standard voltage variant and more powerful than the low-voltage ones found in the Samsung Series 9 and MacBook Airs. Asus also claims that it can scale as high as a Core i7, though it didnt say which one. With a standard volt processor, battery life becomes a concern. And given its size, a more powerful CPU, and the fact that the battery is completely sealed in means that were looking at no more than five hours.Theres no word on pricing yet, but when I asked one of the PR reps if the Asus UX21 will be less expensive than the MacBook Air 11-inch, the answer was a resounding yes.[www.pcmag.com]

Starting at $850, the Dell XPS 15 features a 720p 15.6-inch WLED display. Although this is a bit inferior to rival laptops equipped with full HD screens, there is an option to upgrade to a full 1080p display with facial recognition for $130 more. The exterior casing is made of silver anodized aluminum, and the interior features black palm rests and a black backlit keyboard. It is on the heavy side, though, weighing in at 6.14 pounds with the 6-cell battery.

Like most other pre-built systems, the Dell XPS 15 comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. The base system features an Intel Core i5-460M that runs at 2.53GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz. This is adequate for mainstream gaming. Since the Dell XPS 15 is fully customizable, there is an option to upgrade to a Core i7, but the price tag is steep at $500.

Although an upgrade from the base NVIDIA GT 420M video card to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 2GB graphics card would normally be recommended, it does require an upgrade to an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor as well. If you have the budget, its fine, but many mainstream gamers do not. The NVIDIA GT 420M-based Dell XPS 15 can still be used with medium settings in the latest games, since its a newly released graphics card with 96 shaders and a 128-bit memory interface. The NVIDIA GT 420M also offers Optimus technology.

Along with NVIDIA graphics, the Dell XPS 15 comes standard with 4GB of dual channel DDR3 memory. This is an average amount of memory for a laptop in this price range, but more memory is definitely a good thing to make it future-proof.

Luckily, storage is more than adequate with a base 500GB 7200rpm hard drive that offers decent speed with ample space. A solid state drive is available as a $550 option, but its not worth the price unless you travel incessantly. Although load times of games improve with an SSD, thats about it. It wont give you any marked improvement once in the game.

The Dell XPS 15 gaming laptop PC also comes equipped with a 56 WHr 6-cell battery which makes battery life disappointing. If you want to game on the go, be sure to bring the AC adapter on any prolonged journey. What really stands out is the sound quality. Boasting JBL 2.1 built-in speakers, the Dell XPS 15 offers better audio than many other laptops in this price range. Since this laptop is geared for multimedia, though, it would be nice if a Blu-ray drive was standard. Its easy to overlook this issue, though, since the Dell XPS is priced aggressively.

Overall, the Dell XPS 15 is a decent 15.6-inch machine for the budget-conscious gamer. It offers flexible options, a fast hard drive, and 720p screen. Although gameplay is a bit cramped on any 15-inch notebook, the Dell XPS 15 is easy to tote around for on-the-go gaming. Acer one of the well-known lsptops maker has announced the launch of its new laptop namely, Acer Aspire 5520. The Acer has decided to pack the Aspire 5520 with 3GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory. This lets it run more applications without the need to rely on the swap file giving it slightly better performance when using memory intensive programs or multitasking. The Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 mobile processor can handle most tasks but does trail the Intel Core 2 processor lineup.

Storage wise, the Aspire 5520 is pretty much want one would expect in its price category. A fairly large 160GB hard drive handles all application and data storage. A dual layer DVD burner handles all playback and recording of CDs or DVDs. A built-in 5-in-1 card reader also allows it to interface with most of the popular digital media card storage formats.

Most of the budget systems now use a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD display. Acer sticks with this trend and uses this size screen. It also uses an integrated NVIDIA GeForce 7000M graphics processor to handle annd 2D and 3D graphics. As it is an integrated solution, it doesnt really have any 3D performance behind it, but this is true of all systems in the sub-$750 price range.

The biggest drawback to the Acer Aspire 5520 is its size. It is fairly thick with a 1.7-inch measurement at its thickest. This makes it bigger than the average 15.4-inch notebook system. This doesnt translate into addition weight though. Some might also be upset that it doesnt come with any productivity software at all. This can add some extra expense and time for those that would like it to come with the system.

Design

Behind the 14.1-inch screen, Lenovo has added a magnesium-alloy inner shell to better protect the display, similar to the internal rollcage added to the bottom of the chassis a few years ago. Lenovo claims that the screen is now 25 percent more resistant to breakage than previous models.

The 1440 x 900-pixel widescreen was plenty bright and delivered crisp, vibrant images. Default font sizes are on the small side, but the higher resolution works well with Vistas sidebar widgets. The matte screen cuts down on glare and doesnt cause as much blurring as other matte finishes weve seen (think of it more as a satin finish). Viewing angles are fine side to side, but the screen washes out when viewed from above.

The keyboard is as comfortable as ever, and were happy to see both the TrackPoint pointing stick, with a central scroll toggle between the mouse buttons, and a touchpad with its own buttons. The white LED ThinkLight above the screen sheds just enough light on the keys in a darkened room, and the handy volume and mute buttons sit above the keyboards function keys. The touchpad is a bit on the small side (to accommodate the TrackPoints mouse buttons). Volume from the T61s speakers is good enough for private listening but is barely adequate for use in a presentation.

The T61 delivers all the typical ports, including FireWire and both PC Card and ExpressCard slots, but theres still no memory card reader. As for security, this notebook offers a fingerprint reader for use with the standard TPM circuitry. And security-conscious businesses will appreciate the ability to disable the I/O ports in the BIOS to prevent data from being off-loaded.

Asus original Eee PC, the 701, caused a huge stir in the laptop market, and rightly so. Before it materialised ultraportable laptops were well beyond the reach of most wallets; yet for just £230, the Eee PC offered a fully functional, ultraportable laptop.

Sure, it wasnt perfect. There was no optical drive, the 7in screen was on the small side and, it certainly couldnt lay claim to being as drop dead gorgeous, nor as powerful, as premium-priced ultraportables such as Sonys VGN-TZ31. But the fact you could buy more than four Eees for the price of a single Sony opened everyones eyes to just how cheap a laptop can be.

What the Eee lacks in good looks and alluring specifications, it more than makes up for with practicalities; and this new addition to the range, the Eee PC 900, addresses quite a few of the complaints levelled at the original.

The biggest change is that the tiny screen has been supplanted by an 8.9-inch panel, but while youd expect this to make the 900 physically larger than its predecessor, it doesnt. Instead, the big black speakers which framed the original Eees tiny screen have been moved to the underside of the laptop to make room.

Its a massive change for the better. Even with the specially tailored installation of Xandros Linux - a Windows XP version is also available, although well discuss the compromises later - the originals low 840 x 480 pixel resolution proved a little limiting for even the most basic browsing or document editing. Not only is the 900s screen physically larger, but its native resolution has risen to a far more manageable 1,024 x 600 pixels - enough to make surfing the web an enjoyable experience.

It provides good image quality too. Its no match for the likes of Sonys VGN-TZ31, but its amply and evenly bright across its nine inches, and colours are vibrant and punchy. More disappointing is the noticeable graininess to the image, but its not serious enough to impede day to day usage.

Room for manoeuvre
The rest of the Eees specification has also had a slight overhaul. Theres no sign of Intels Atom processors yet, so the same Intel Celeron 900MHz processor beavers away under the hood. But the complement of memory has risen from 512MB to 1GB, and the hard drive has also swelled from the original 2GB or 4GB options to a much more sensible 20GB. The storage is spread between two drives, however, with 4GB provided by onboard flash memory and another 16GB provided by a separate internal SSD drive.

The 4GB partition is still a touch on the small side for the operating system partition, but, while the 16GB secondary drive is tiny by todays standards, its a more than welcome improvement on one of the original Eees major drawbacks. Now theres ample room for documents and collections of music and video files without having to remember to bring the right flash drive or SD card whenever you leave the house.

Thanks to the solid state disks, the Eee feels fantastically snappy in use. Our benchmarks cant be run under Linux, but we managed to get some of them running under a Windows XP installation. The 2D graphics and media-encoding segments returned scores of 0.28 and 0.33 respectively. That may not be fast, but considering the Eees keen price, and the fact that intensive applications probably wont be its primary use, its not bad at all.
